walking helps clean your brain.

Even just walking or standing

helps clean your brain.

Scientists have discovered a "hidden" brain-cleaning mechanism triggered by abdominal contractions that physically squeezes toxins out of neural tissue.
Scientists at Pennsylvania State University have uncovered
a "hydraulic pump"
in the body that flushes the brain during
physical activity.

By observing neural activity and abdominal contractions, researchers found that when core muscles tighten
—even slightly during walking or standing—they push blood into the spinal cord and create pressure that causes
the brain to shift within the skull.
This mechanical movement acts like a "squeeze" on a sponge, forcing cerebrospinal fluid through brain tissue
to effectively rinse away metabolic waste that builds up throughout the day.
This discovery offers a vital link between physical movement and the prevention of neurodegenerative diseases.
While it was previously known that
the brain "washes" itself during sleep,
this study reveals a complementary daytime cleaning cycle powered by our own muscles. By engaging in basic activities like walking, or core stretching, individuals may be actively triggering the removal of toxins that contribute to cognitive decline.
As neuroscientist Patrick Drew notes, these small internal shifts make a massive difference for long-term brain health, proving that physical fitness is fundamental to maintaining a clear mind.
